Tournaments

  • Tournament: A series of contests or matches to determine a winner.
  • Grand Slam: A series of four major tennis tournaments: Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open.
  • Major: A major sporting event, such as the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup.
  • Bracket: A diagram showing the pairings and results of a tournament.

Leagues

  • League: A group of teams that compete against each other in a series of games.
  • Division: A subdivision of a league.
  • Conference: A group of teams within a league that compete against each other.
  • Playoffs: A series of games to determine the league champion.

Events

  • Match: A contest between two individuals or teams.
  • Game: A contest or competition.
  • Set: A division of a match, particularly in tennis and other racket sports.
  • Inning: A division of a baseball or cricket game.
  • Quarter: A division of a game, particularly in American football and basketball.
  • Half: A division of a game, particularly in soccer and rugby.

  • Athlete: A person who is trained to compete in sports.
  • Coach: A person who trains athletes.
  • Referee: A person who officiates a sports game.
  • Spectator: A person who watches a sports event.
  • Venue: A place where a sports event is held.
