Past Tense: Forming Sentences and Questions

Past Tense is used to talk about actions or events that happened in the past.

Simple Past Tense:

  • Regular Verbs: Add -ed to the base form.
    • Example: I walked to school yesterday.
  • Irregular Verbs: Have different past tense forms.
    • Example: She ate an apple.

Forming Questions:

  • Begin with a helping verb: did, was, were
  • Place the subject after the helping verb.
  • Keep the main verb in the base form.

Example:

  • Did you walk to school yesterday?
  • Was she hungry?

Negative Sentences:

  • Use “didn’t” or “wasn’t/weren’t” with the base form of the main verb.

Example:

  • I didn’t walk to school yesterday.
  • She wasn’t hungry.

Using the Simple Past Tense

  • I played football yesterday.
  • She watched a movie last night.
  • We visited the museum last week.
  • They didn’t go to the beach yesterday.
  • Did you eat breakfast this morning?
  • Was she happy yesterday?

Using Irregular Verbs

  • I saw a movie yesterday.
  • She went to the store.
  • We ate dinner at a restaurant.
  • They didn’t drink coffee.
  • Did you see the movie?
  • Was she sick?
