Basic Vocabulary for Parts of the Body

Head:

  • Hair: The hair on a person’s head.
  • Face: The front part of the head.
  • Forehead: The part of the face above the eyebrows.
  • Eyebrow: The hair above the eye.
  • Eye: The organ used for sight.
  • Nose: The part of the face used for breathing and smelling.
  • Mouth: The opening in the face used for eating and speaking.
  • Lip: The border of the mouth.
  • Tooth: A hard object in the mouth used for chewing.
  • Ear: The organ used for hearing.
  • Chin: The lower part of the face.
  • Neck: The part of the body that connects the head to the torso.

Torso:

  • Shoulder: The part of the body where the arm joins the body.
  • Chest: The front part of the upper body.
  • Back: The rear part of the body.
  • Stomach: The part of the body below the chest.
  • Waist: The narrowest part of the torso.
  • Hip: The area on either side of the pelvis.
  • Buttocks: The rounded fleshy part of the hips.

Arms and Legs:

  • Arm: The upper limb of the body.
  • Hand: The part of the arm at the end.
  • Finger: One of the five digits on the hand.
  • Thumb: The thickest finger.
  • Leg: The lower limb of the body.
  • Foot: The part of the leg below the ankle.
  • Toe: One of the five digits on the foot.

Other Body Parts:

  • Heart: The organ that pumps blood.
  • Lungs: The organs used for breathing.
  • Liver: An organ that filters blood.
  • Kidney: An organ that filters waste from the blood.
  • Brain: The organ that controls thought, emotion, and movement.
