Lesson No 27B-Introduction To Complex Sentences Using Conjunctions

Introduction to Complex Sentences Using Conjunctions

Complex sentences are sentences that contain one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. An independent clause can stand alone as a complete sentence, while a dependent clause cannot.

Subordinating conjunctions are used to connect independent and dependent clauses in complex sentences. Here are some common subordinating conjunctions:

  • after
  • although
  • as
  • because
  • before
  • if
  • since
  • though
  • unless
  • until
  • when
  • where
  • while

Examples of complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions:

  • Because it was raining, we stayed home.
  • When I saw him, I waved.
  • Although she is tired, she will finish her work.
  • If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
  • While I was watching TV, the phone rang.

Note: The dependent clause in a complex sentence can come before or after the independent clause.

Examples:

  • After I finished my homework, I watched TV.
  • I watched TV after I finished my homework.
