Coordinating Conjunctions: FANBOYS

FANBOYS is a mnemonic device used to remember the coordinating conjunctions in English:

  • For
  • And
  • Nor
  • But
  • Or
  • Yet
  • So

These conjunctions are used to connect words, phrases, or clauses of equal importance.

Examples:

  • For: He went to the store for milk.
  • And: I like apples and bananas.
  • Nor: Neither coffee nor tea is good for me.
  • But: She is tall but thin.
  • Or: Would you like tea or coffee?
  • Yet: He studied hard, yet he didn’t pass the exam.
  • So: It was raining, so we stayed inside.
