Coordinating Conjunctions: FANBOYS
FANBOYS is a mnemonic device used to remember the coordinating conjunctions in English:
- For
- And
- Nor
- But
- Or
- Yet
- So
These conjunctions are used to connect words, phrases, or clauses of equal importance.
Examples:
- For: He went to the store for milk.
- And: I like apples and bananas.
- Nor: Neither coffee nor tea is good for me.
- But: She is tall but thin.
- Or: Would you like tea or coffee?
- Yet: He studied hard, yet he didn’t pass the exam.
- So: It was raining, so we stayed inside.
