Common Verbs in English

Verbs are words that express actions, states, or occurrences. Here are some of the most common verbs in English:

Action Verbs:

  • Go: to move from one place to another
  • Do: to perform an action
  • Have: to possess or own something
  • Be: to exist
  • See: to perceive with the eyes
  • Say: to speak
  • Think: to have a thought or opinion
  • Know: to be aware of
  • Feel: to experience a sensation
  • Want: to desire something

Linking Verbs:

  • Be: to exist
  • Become: to start to be something
  • Seem: to appear to be
  • Look: to appear to be a certain way
  • Sound: to have a particular sound
  • Taste: to have a particular flavor
  • Smell: to have a particular odor
  • Feel: to have a particular sensation

Helping Verbs:

  • Do: used to form questions and negatives
  • Have: used to form the perfect tenses
  • Be: used to form the passive voice and progressive tenses
  • Will: used to express future tense
  • Can: used to express ability
  • Could: used to express possibility or ability in the past
  • May: used to express possibility or permission
  • Might: used to express possibility
  • Should: used to express obligation or advice
  • Must: used to express necessity or obligation

Examples of sentences using verbs:

  • I go to school every day.
  • She does her homework every night.
  • We have a dog.
  • He is a student.
  • I see a bird.
  • She says hello.
  • I think it’s going to rain.
  • He knows how to play the guitar.
  • I feel happy.
  • I want a new phone.
