Using First

The word “first” has several meanings and functions in English.

Here are some of the most common:

Adjective (विशेषण):

Preceding all others in time, order, or importance: सबसे पहले इस वक्त या क्रम में:

She won first prize. उसने पहला पुरस्कार जीता।

The first day of school. स्कूल का पहला दिन।

It is my first time doing this. यह मेरी पहली बार है कि मैं यह कर रहा हूँ।

Ranking before all others: सभी के सामने रैंकिंग करते हुए:

The first violin in the orchestra. ओर्केस्ट्रा में पहला वायलिन।

He was the first to arrive. वह पहले पहुँचा।

Being at the lowest forward gear ratio of a motor vehicle: मोटर वाहन के सबसे कम अग्रिम गियर अनुपात में:

I couldn’t get the car out of first gear. मैं गाड़ी को पहले गियर से निकाल नहीं पाया।

Adverb (क्रिया-विशेषण):

Before another in time, space, or importance: दूसरों के सामने समय, स्थान या महत्व में:

First, wash your hands. सबसे पहले, अपने हाथ धोएँ।

First things first. पहली बात सबसे पहले।

I’d like to ask you a question first. मैं पहले आपसे एक सवाल पूछना चाहता हूँ।

For the first time: पहली बार:

I saw her for the first time yesterday. मैंने कल उसे पहली बार देखा।

This is the first time I’ve tried this recipe. यह मेरी पहली बार है जब मैंने यह रेसिपी आजमाई है।

Rather than something else: कुछ और के बजाय:

Noun (संज्ञा):

The one before the second: दूसरे से पहले वाला:

He came in first. उसने पहले आया।

Any person, thing, class, place, etc., regarded as coming before others:

किसी भी व्यक्ति, वस्तु, वर्ग, स्थान, आदि, जो दूसरों के सामने आता है:
